A Day Trip Worth Taking
The pandemic may be sticking around longer than we'd like, but if you have the desire to get out of town, I have a great spot to share with you.
Head to northern Arizona to enjoy cooler weather and a national monument, Sunset Crater Volcano. This destination is just a 30 minute drive north of Flagstaff and is well worth visiting.
What to do
Visiting Sunset Crater Volcano is a great half day excursion, when staying in the area. Pack a lunch and plan on snapping a few photos of the scenery. There is a lot of history and the National Park Service has done a great job providing a lot of information throughout the trails. Keep in mind that the volcano erupted almost a thousand years ago!
The majority of the roads are easily accessible, even in an RV. Take advantage of the pullouts and take in the views. Enjoy the outdoors and choose a few hikes to explore in the area. Several of the hikes are easy and great for people of all ages. I highly recommend visiting the monument to add a little variety to your northern Arizona adventure.
Good to Know
Did you know that if you have a National Park Pass, it also gives you access to national monuments? Click here to grab your pass or you can expect to pay a $25 entrance fee per vehicle at the monument. Oh and don’t forget if you have a 4th grader, your entrance to parks and monuments is free, so grab their pass here.
The monument does not offer camping, but Bonita Campground is nearby and provides an area for dry camping.
The visitor center and museum is currently closed, but the bookstore is available for curbside purchases Friday - Tuesday.
Rangers are available near the bookstore to answer questions.
After checking out Sunset Crater Volcano, continue driving Wupatki National Monument. At this location you can expect to see Native American archeological sites.
Don’t plan on having cell phone service while in the area. Be in the moment.
